Summer reflections

Summer reflections

New Mosque

As Autumn drifts in, it is a good time to reflect on the summer months and allow those memories and lessons to guide you through the winter months.

I was fortunately able to visit Istanbul for a couple of weeks in September. Istanbul is an amazing place. Full of culture, creativity, smells, sounds and atmosphere. It is like no other place a have been in the world.

Coming from a European country like England, Istanbul is quite a contrast in a number of ways. These contrasts are on the whole quite soothing for a westerner.  The pace of life, the audible call to prayer throughout the streets, the importance of family and feasting together and the abundance of culture (ancient and modern day). We came away already planning the next trip back!

Patience – no rush or hassle, moving when ready, not before

Family – seeing how much family means and the importance of bonding together

Genuine hospitality – being put up, fed and shown around like a royal guest

Contentment – seeing the fisherman on the shore of the Bosporus eating the fish they caught that day

Understanding – going into some of the most peaceful (and beautiful) Mosques and feeling humbled
