So as you may have read, I was invited to attend the first Crossfit Invitational between Europe and the USA. Me and my husband went and as you would expect, pretty much everyone from the audience, competitors to the back stage crew were absolutely RIPPED!! Me and my husband felt very conscious of the difference between our some what ‘slimmer’ physiques!

Week 4 – The Yoga Solution with Tara Stiles

This week I tried Yoga with Tara Stiles on Live Strong Woman YouTube channel. I wanted to see if these home Yoga routines would give me a cardio element as well as the tone and stretch I have experienced before. I began with the Cardio Workout which consists of a series of poses and transitions which are repeated at a reasonable pace. This definitely raised the heart rate and got the body nice and warm. The only draw back is if you are new to Yoga, you will need to follow some of her other videos first to learn the basic poses.

Week 3 – Crossfit I have heard and seen a lot of hype surrounding this seemingly ‘boisterous’ and ‘competitive’ way of exercising, so I was really interested when I came across this article by SELF magazine on a basic Crossfit total body workout. This article was geared towards us women and explained the general concept of Crossfit.

My friend Mel was over so we did all three of the routines (WOD 1, 2, 3) together in my front room. The three routines are actually short workouts to do over three days and the idea is that you do each routine once a week. We felt that each routine was not really long enough so that is why we did all three.

The exercises are very basic and use large groups of muscles at the same time. This means it was easy to remember the next exercise in the circuit. This was imperative really as the timings and repetition differences for each workout takes a while to get your ahead around!

So, last week I said to you all that I was going follow one home workout from a YouTube fitness channel per week, for the next 5 weeks. You have given me some great ideas on which ones you want testing out so here is the first one………….

Week 1 – Ashley Borden Perfect Form at Livestrong Woman

The first routine I followed was the Home warm up and Circuit video. This takes about 25 – 30 minutes in total with simple but effective warm-up exercises particularly targeting the major muscles groups which are used later in the circuit. After you do this short warm-up the circuit begins.

Exercising at home as boomed with the help of YouTube, Nintendi Wii and an endless list of celebrity DVD workouts. This is a great thing as keeping fit should not cost a fortune and exercise can easily be done in the privacy of your own home. The biggest problem is which one to buy/download? do the presenters know what they are actually doing? and is it going to make a difference to my body in the same way they claim?

Well, I thought with your best interest in mind I would try a selection of five YouTube home exercise routines and let you know which ones to are great and which ones to dismiss and why. Over the next five weeks I will be trying a session/method per week by various fitness ‘guru’s’ and letting you know what I thought! If you have any particular videos you would like me to try then please let me know asap.

As part of the London 2012 Festival and LIFT 2012 Festival, leading up to the launch of the London 2012 Olympics, Elizabeth Streb’s company STREB, performed a series of surprise works. These were either on top of (!) or next to some of London’s iconic landmarks.

In Elizabeth’s own words the company “intertwines the disciplines of dance, athletics, boxing, rodeo, the circus, and Hollywood stunt-work”. The New York based choreographer was comissioned by the London 2012 Olympic Committee to create a series of surprise works across central London.

I went to see one of the works which the details of were released only 45 minutes before hand via various social media outlets! There was an incredible buzz around Trafalgar Square and great anticipation for what was about to be performed.

Trafalgar Square was packed full of devoted followers of the SREB surprises and curious tourists who stumbled across this extrodinary event. The performance was based around a huge metal rotating ladder placed in front of The National Gallery.

Nutrition and disordered eating in dance: Artistry, athleticism and the role of the multidisciplinary support team

On 30th April 2012 I attended the conference ‘Nutrition and disordered eating in dance: Artistry, athleticism and the role of themultidisciplinary support team’ organised by Dance UK. The event was attended by a wide range of dance industry experts alongside nutritionists and health workers. The quality of information shared at this conference was second to none, however there were a few highlights which considering the topic, were of particular interest.

The day kicked off with an incredible in-sight into the ‘perspective from artistic directors on the aesthetic and physical requirements and their implications for dancer’s health’. In general the directors were open about dance’s historic struggle with nutrition and particularly with eating disorders. Experiences from the artistic directors who had and do have dancers struggling with disordered eating was an eye opener, and they explained how they had dealt with the situation and supported the dancer/s concerned. It was clear that the artistic directors, regardless of the genre, wanted dancers who were healthy and strong as this enables the dancer to perform at their peak. They even questioned whether the current multi-disciplinary demands of dancers are actually realistic and whether this was putting new pressures on dancers.

This was ingeniously followed by thoughts and comments regarding the ‘performance demands, education, and support: The dancers’ perspective’ by a panel of leading professional dancers.  Their honesty with this topic was refreshing and at times saddening. The panel expressed their difficulties with disordered eating and it was interesting to hear the different accounts from the various genres represented (Ballet, Contemporary, Hip-Hop and South Asian). The need for more nutritional education whilst dancers train for the profession was highlighted, however, the difficulties of practically implementing this information were also discussed. Although dancers need to take responsibility for their own bodies, the importance of scheduling and planning by company directors during tours and rehearsals seemed to be equally important.

Last Sunday I was invited to attend the 321 training method which was created by Ramona Braganza, Personal Trainer to the stars! Ramona is based in Los Angeles and has over 20 years experience training A-lister celebrities such as Scarlett Johanson, Halle Berry and Anne Hathaway.

The day was great and was truly inspiring to meet such a successful female personal trainer. The 321 training method is a great structure to follow during group exercise and one-to-one personal training sessions. I tested it out over the Easter weekend with one of my clients and she really enjoyed it! It was a really fast paced session and therefore even through the strength circuits and core section, the pace did not slow down for a minute!

I am now officially a Ramona Braganza 321 trainer, so if you would like to find out any more please contact me right away.
